Welcome!

Hello, I'm Josh and welcome to my AS Media blog. I have worked very hard on my blog, I have had to fight against it at times when I have had difficulty uploading images or arranging things the way I wanted them, but in the end, I got there! I hope you enjoy my work!

Audience Feedback

I showed my completed magazine to the people who had helped contribute to its production, classmates and friends alike. Here are what some of them said about my work:

'Excellent front page and double page spread, contents page good but slightly disorganised.'
'Double page spread is fantastic, content is good and layout grabs your attention due to colour scheme and picture/text ratio.'

'Your evaluation is really good, I had never even heard of Prezi before!'

'I really like the idea of your sketches and annotating them with a more detailed description on the back, makes it seem like you knew what you wanted and how you wanted it done.'

'School magazine is very good'

'Lots of Planning labels on the side of your blog, seems you really researched how to make the best magazine possible!'

Despite alot of postive comments about my magazine, it was far from perfect and some people gave me advice on how to improve it:

'Contents page is quite disorganised, could do with a little bit more structure'

'Front cover looks quite plain with the solo background colour and picture, needs filling up a little'

'School magazine probably better than music magazine'

'Prezi evaluation doesnt go into depth on some questions, could do with another paragraph or two'

In my own personal view, I am rather pleased with how my music magazine went. I have struggled this year, learning to use new software such as Fireworks and Prezi and in trying to use Blogger to its maximum potential. However, I really enjoyed all of the tasks and feel I did enough research and planning to help me create a quality music magazine. My favourite pieces of work are my flat plan drawings and my evaluation, as alot of time was spent on them. Also, I am not the most creative person, but my hard work on those assignments seems to have paid off. There could be improvements to my work, and I think that both my front cover and contents page could do with a little extra work doing to them. My front cover could be filled out and my contents page more organised. I also think I could have done more research into my target audience and finding out exactly what it is I needed to produce to satisfy them.

I hope you have enjoyed my work as much as I enjoyed producing it.

Practice Front Cover Flat Plans

Here is a sketch of my practice front cover. This was the design I was going to use before I changed my mind in favour of the 'Plug-In' design. The numbers in circles relate to a detailed list written on the back of the sketch which further describes certain aspects of it, such as the also featuring box, the background colour and the title.

Practice Double Page Spread Flat Plan

Here is my double page spread flat plan, which contains the main components such as the interview, pictures and headlines. There is also more detailed list of the double page spread, written out on the back of the plan. The numbers on the sketch relate to the number on the detailed list.

Practice Contents Page Flat Plan

This is the flat plan for my contents page which I drew prior to making my contents page as a plan for what I was trying to recreate. This is only a rough outline of what I would like my magazine contents page to look like but it still highlights the key areas of the page, the title, sections, articles and pictures.

Evaluation Question 7

7 - Looking Back At Your Preliminary Task (The School Magazine Task), What Do You Feel You Have Learnt In The Progression From It To Full Product?

One of the main things I learnt from my school magazine was the amount of time to put into my music magazine. I spent so much time on the music magazine tweaking the smallest parts of it, which I didn’t do in my school magazine. I also learnt how to balance my time effectively when I did my music magazine. When completing the Preliminary task, I was rushed to get it in on time as I didn't properly manage my time. However, I learned from my mistake and successfully completed my final task long before the deadline.

I also learnt how to use Fireworks much better, how to get a more full use of the things you can do with it. For example, in the contents page of my music magazine I have created boxes all over the page to help group all of the different sections together, which I was not able to do when doing my school magazine.

I also learnt from taking the photographs of my school magazine about different angles, lightings and backgrounds, which ultimately helped make my music magazine photographs better. As you can see from the photos I took under the 'Photo Shoot' label, I have used several different locations, clothing, lighting and angles when I took the photos for my music magazine. I also took alot more photos than I did when shooting the ones for my school magazine.

Here are my two front covers, and below are my two contents pages.

Evaluation Question 6

6 -What Have You Learnt About Technologies From The Process of Constructing This Product?

I learnt a lot about technologies from creating my music magazine. One piece of technology I got a lot better at using was Fireworks. Prior to my making my music magazine, I had never used Fireworks before. Fireworks provided a easy way to create my magazine front cover and contents page, and was particularly useful because it allows for quick simple editing. It was possibly the most important technology I used this year as it allowed me to create my magazine the exact way I wanted to.

I was also new to Blogger this year, and as it is where all my work is uploaded to, it was important to figure out how to use it pretty quickly! I have also started my own blog reporting on football matches as this is what I hope to do at University, and Blogger has been exceptionally useful in gaining that experience. I also learnt how to properly design my blog, so I could add my own pictures where I wanted them, choose my own background and format my blog.

Another technology I was new to this year was Microsoft Publisher. This was equally as important as Macromedia Fireworks, as I created a large portion, the double page spread, of my magazine on Publisher. Publisher allowed me to see both pages of my double page spread alongside one another so I could properly arrange my text and pictures the way I wanted them.

I was also new to SlideShare this year. I used SlideShare to upload all of the presentations I did on various magazines, in the Planning and Research stage, to my blog. SlideShare allowed me to upload presentations I had done on my computer onto the internet for sharing. I did have some difficulty using SlideShare, as it wouldnt work on my home computer, so I had to transfer all of the work I did at home onto my school computer via a USB stick!
